Through the book fair at school it was almost twice the price, therefore was not allowed to get it. He loves the book. It was everything he expected. My wife teaches robotics to kids in school's evening clubs and also in various summer camps in Silicon Valley CA, We bought this for teaching kids grades 5 thru' 8. The value of this book is not in the number of documented designs, but how it teaches you the process to come up with your own designs. It even does it in a much more entertaining way then my engineering classes did. I'm not sure actually buying this book is necessary because he has a blog on the NYTimes website called "Abstract City," and this entire lego-themed book was one of his early posts. I was surprised by how well the book explains C programming on the NXT and delighted by the many excellent examples. We were able to get a program running on the first day. We did not use but I was impressed by the many excellent, illustrated examples of construction. C programming is hard for students to grasp and they eventually gave up but this was not the book's fault. ...more
