They include a few legos, but directions for several different ways of putting them together to make fun creations. We took one of these books on a recent roadtrip and my son enjoyed playing with this for hours at the hotel each night. When it was time to go in the morning, the legos could be neatly packed back up inside the book and it slipped in his backpack until the next evening. I definitely recommend these books for all Lego lovers out there. ...more

They give detailed instructions to make several items with the included legos. They also store nicely. They store like a book in the bookshelf. There is a box connected to the hard back book, and they all store nicely. My son plays with these almost every day. He has had them almost a month. I definitely will buy the rest of the sets. ...more

Even my 5 year old can follow some of the steps since they are all pictures. I wish you could make more than one item without taking apart your previous creation though. So, for Christmas we sent him a book of Lego. Went down very well, and our nephew has been happily playing and creating to his heart's content. Sure the book is completely unnecessary (in my day it was a folded up piece of paper with the instructions shoved into the box...), but hey - it looks cool, and its just a novel way of doing it that makes it unique and special. ...more

I'm not sure actually buying this book is necessary because he has a blog on the NYTimes website called "Abstract City," and this entire lego-themed book was one of his early posts. This was the first Mindstorms book that I read and it was really easy to understand and got me off to a quick start. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars was that the graphics and text are printed on an off white background and it made it a little harder to read and the graphics themselves are all black and white and some of them were a little hard to figure out the robot designs because of it.
