Summary: Engaging and Helpful
... This book is a wonderful introduction into program and design with the NXT, and yes, we've been using the RCX as well. The book is well laid out. The story is engaging and gives the tasks purpose. I really like the templates provided in the book. It gives anyone a method of organizing their thoughts, so they can go ahead with the building and programming and know they're headed down the right path. I bought this for my children because I have no interest in robotics or programming, and I've enjoyed it as much as they

Summary: Good stuff for any roboticist
... At 43 years old I too was wondering if this was just for kids, but it definitely is not. It opens your mind to move beyond the following the step by step instructions in most all the other books out there. One must remember the kit was called Mindstorms for a reason, so you can develop your own ingenious creations. This book helps you do just that. As for the story, it is written in a mature fashion and is integrated perfectly to hold your interest, adult or child. My mind drifts back to those old movies with the Mummy,

Summary: Learning the process
... The value of this book is not in the number of documented designs, but how it teaches you the process to come up with your own designs. It even does it in a much more entertaining way then my engineering classes did. Understanding the design process allows you to create any number of robots that do what you want them to do and this is an invaluable life skill. That is what this book teaches you. It allows you to try to come up with the solutions on your own, or build the solutions the author came up with. My son and

The book is a comprehensive guide from finding equipments to building and programming techniques. This book has so many tips and tricks that will help you to do well in the competition. For example, the book shows me how to brace my design, how to position the robot precisely so that it will hit the target, and how to help the robot to self-align itself, just to name a few. The book is written clear and concise. It only took me 2 ...more

Lego Crazy Action Contraptions: A Lego Inventions Book (Klutz)
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-11-04 Summary: The best addition to any Lego collection ... My son has a HUGE bin of Legos and enjoys building and rebuilding. This box/kit really challenges him. The best part is most of the contraptions have a function. He loves the candy dispenser made with Legos and rubber bands. I highly recommend this for any Lego lover! ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-05-05 Summary: legos to go ... My ten year old loves legos ... and I love peace and quiet in the car! This product worked out great as a "trip treat", the bag was great so he could keep track of them. We use an aluminum cake pan with a plastic cover for a lego desk/holder in the car, but the book with a bag made it so he could take it into the hotel and restaurant with no fuss ... and isn't that what every mom really wants ??? no fuss??? GO LEGOS!!!!!!!! ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2008-11-17 Summary: We all love it! ... We got this for our four year old at the time. He is almost 7 now, and we all still enjoy choosing instructions from this book to work on together. I do think the pouch is a little small for all the pieces. The zip line "robot" as my kids call it doesn't work so great, but otherwise, we've enjoyed all the projects - takes between 8 and 15 minutes to build one, if we don't stop to play together. I agree that if the child is 8 or older, this would be something they would need very little help with. Of course, you need ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-04-03 Summary: Hours of fun ... This has many fun and challenging activities a child can do with Legos. The projects use the pieces that come with the book plus basic pieces most Lego fans will already own. Easy to follow directions with fun results. The child can use the basic ideas and expand upon them, so this kit isn't limited as some are. We got it for my son's 10th birthday and I think it would be appropriate for an 8 to 14 year old. ...more

[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-07-16 Summary: The Best, Most Complete Guide to NXT-G ... There's no other book out there that covers the NXT-G programming language. Jim Kelly covers the subject thoroughly, in a clear, friendly and encouraging style. The book not only covers NXT-G, it's also a primer on what programming is and how it works. With this book, teachers, students and beginners will have everything they need to understand how NXT-G works and how to use it. Advanced users will learn a thing or two as well, particularly with respect to some of the lesser known blocks within the NXT-G program. ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-02-25 Summary: Great resource for NXT-G programming ... This book covers a lot of ground on NXT-G programming and is a must have resource for anyone serious about programming in NXT-G as the on line help included with the NXT set is not adequate. As a professional programmer and a robotics hobbyist, I would recommend that anyone wanting to bring out the full potential of their NXT creations move to a text based language like Robot-C instead. While NXT-G is good for simple programs, it is just to difficult to create anything of any complexity as the graphical elements and ...more

Getting Started with LEGO Trains
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2004-12-16 Summary: Mainstream LEGO train documentation ... Well written, lots of research, with the three model diagrams being the highlight of this book. Beginners will have to put the book down, get the bricks they need, then come back to build McKee's great designs. I would have ordered the designs a bit differntly, however, with easier designs first, leading up to the more complicated engine design. There's a lot of good reference here, and the author is quite thorough when following through on his assumed intentions to introduce LEGO trains into the mainstream. He's broken ...more

[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2007-01-03 Summary: Recommended for real Lego Train fans ... This book delivers pretty much what you would expect. The first part covers some general background on the Lego 9V train system (if you are looking for info on the newer RC stuff, this book is not for you). The second part gives detailed building instructions for some cars and an engine. The last chapter gives some track layout ideas. The book is written in a very to-the-point style and very well illustrated. The projects suggested are very nice, though it might be hard finding some of the parts Jake suggests using. ...more
